Blood Scarab - DVD Review

by Bruce Jordan

The Countess Bathory (Monique Parent) is in search of a way to feed in the daylight. I say feed because she somehow was married to Count Dracula, who showed her that instead of bathing in the blood of virgins, she could just suck their blood. After Dracula dies from being exposed to sunlight, it's up to his servant Renfield (Del Howison) to find a way for her to be able to feed during the day. (Apparently, there isn't enough time to do so at night.) Renfield leads her to an Egyptian mummy who has the ability to grant her the power to survive in sunlight, and with whom she makes a pact involving three victims. No, I swear, I'm not making this shit up.

To call Blood Scarab a horror film is suspect at best, and I realize that it wasn't meant to be taken seriously, (at least I hope not!) but one competent actor would have been nice. Plus, it's really hard to take an actress seriously when they shed their clothes at the drop of a hat; This film is basically just an excuse to have a bunch of females writhe around in the nude as much as possible. I'm reminded of a time in the 80's when late night Cinemax was simply known as skin-a-max.

There's really not much to say about this one. Unless you're a fan of really bad films, this isn't for you. On the other hand, if you like awful CGI, bad acting, ridiculous plot lines, and lots of boobs, this might be right up your alley. Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of what some would consider to be shitty films, but this was just too much. Personally, I want my 81 minutes back!
